After seeing four signs, old age, sickness, death, and a monk, Siddhartha felt so sad and finally decided to leave his kingdom and wordly life for ascetichood. Before leaving, Siddhartha went quietly to see his newborn son and his wife, Yasodhara who were sleeping. It was midnight, and the prince was on his white horse Kanthaka with Channa, his faithful servant, holding on to its tail. He rode to the bank of the river Anoma and dismounted from his horse. The prince took his sword and cut his long hair, donned simple clothes, took a begging bowl and asked Channa to go back with Kanthaka.
