At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in Jeta’s Grove near Savatthi giving a sermon describing the story of Devadatta Thera. Once upon a time, a king named Somphamit ruled the great city of Champa. He had a younger brother, Asomphamit, a Queen, Kaeoketsini, and two sons, Sayasena and Sayadatta. One day, Asomphamit planned to assassinate King Somphamit to obtain the royal throne. Fortunately, a loyal pasha informed the king. Then the king along with the queen and his two sons escaped from the kingdom. They traveled into a forest where they were in danger and experienced much suffering.

Suddhinnaṃ vata me dānaṃ asavak khayavahaṃ nibbāna paccayo hotu me anāgate kāle (May the gifts that I have already given be a condition for me to obtain the extinction of defilements and reach Nirvāna in the future).
