Once upon a time, Buddha Gotama resided at the Chetawan temple and talked about the wealthy man Anatha Binthika who always made donations and was well protected by the deities. Lord Buddha told a Jātaka story entitled Rattanamani Kuman. Lord Buddha was born as a boy named Rattanamani in a poor family. His parents taught him to be empathetic to animals. Later, his parents died when he was still a boy, he therefore lived in poverty alone. He had to beg for food from neighbors and worked in exchange for money. He was suffering as he became an orphan because, in his previous life, he had trapped baby birds in a cage without feeding them. One day he passed the house of a cattle dealer and asked for a job. The merchant saw his humble personality thereby accepting him as an adopted child.
