While the Buddha was dwelling at the Jetavanna monastery, Ananda Thera together with other monks questioned the Buddha. Why are the people in the world so different; some people are long-lived; some people are middle-lived; some people are short-lived? The Buddha delivered this sermon. The people are different because of the results of their previous actions such as doing merit with giving alms, observing precepts and meditation. Some people collected merit much more than sin. Some people sin much more than merit. Then the Buddha compared the age of each Buddha in the past until the future Buddha named Si Ariya Metteyya.
