The story tells that on one occasion, the Buddha was dwelling at the Jatavana Monastery in Savatthi. King Pasendi along with his followers came to the presence of the Buddha, saluted the Buddha and sat on one side. The king questioned the Buddha about what supreme should be done for giving gifts, observing precepts, and listening to the Dhamma preaching? What the most profits should be received from giving gifts, observing precepts, and listening to the Dhamma preaching?
