On one occasion, while dwelling at the Jetavanna monastery the Buddha spoke to monks about Mahapajapati Gotami and delivered this sermon. At one time, Mahapajapati Gotami wished to become an ordained person in order to keep the eight precepts. But the Buddha did not give her permission. Due to the Buddha had not allowed any women for such ordination. Latter, the Buddha issued the eight garudhammas (heavy rules) for the female monks, of which Mahapajapati Gotami pleasedly accepted the rules. Finally, she was ordained as the first bhikkhuni (female monk) in the Buddha’s Teachings.
