Description of manuscript content:
In the Buddha’s time, while residing at Jetavan in Savatthi the Buddha was asked by King Mahanama about what result of merit to the ones who gave alms-giving. Then the Buddha delivered a sermon describing the merit derived from giving various gifts. For examples: the one who made a Buddha statue as a gift will get merit for ten kappa (eon); the one who made a manuscript as a gift will get merit for nine kappa; the one who hadbeen ordained as a monk will get merit for eight kappa; the one who built a stupa as a gift will get merit for seven kappa; and so on.
Colophon:
Folio 15 on the verso side: The writing of this manuscript was finished at the time of the evening [horn] (between 15.00–16.30 o’clock), on the sixth waning day of the ninth [lunar] month, BE 2500. Bhikkhu Sitthivangso is the scribe of this manuscript entitled Sòng Sapphathan Luang for the purpose of supporting the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May I share the merit with you. Dedicated to my daughter named Sao (Mrs.) Dam. Thit (ex-monk) Daeng is the sponsor of this manuscript. May all my wishes and desired came true in any existence until I finally enter Nirvāna as the ultimate. Sādhu sādhu niccaṃ dhuvaṃ (Amen! Amen! Constantly and certainly). Chao Mòm (monk) Phò Saen is the scribe.
