Description of manuscript content:
In the Buddha’s time, the Buddha delivered a sermon of Salakarivijja Sutta to Ananda Thera, his closed attendant while residing in Rajagir, India. Firstly, the Buddha asked Ananda Thera about his serious sickness; and then Ananda Thera informed the Buddha that his disease is still serious and increases him suffering and distressed. Then the Buddha adviced him to learn Salakarivijja Sutta, to remember the text and recite the Sutta regularly. By chanting, the Venerable will relieve his suffering from illness. The Buddha also said that the fomer Buddhas in the past also delivered the sermon of Salakarivijja Sutta to his followers for their benifits.
Colophon:
Folio 19 on the recto side: In BE 2486, a tao sanga year, on the twelfth waxing day of the fifth [lunar] month, a kap set day, the sixth day of the week (Friday), the writing of this manuscript was finished at noon (between 10.30–12.00 o’clock). Ba (Mr.) Si from Hòm Kok Chiang had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Salakarivisasut to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May all my wishes and desires come true and may I finally enter the crystal city which is Nirvāna. That is what I desire. Nibbāna paccayo hotu no niccaṃ dhuvaṃ (May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvāna, constantly and certainly). May the preacher or reader consider, if there might be any misspellings in the writing. Rewriting the text again, my hand is unstable for this writing. Thit (ex-monk) Thong from Vat That is the scribe.
