The contents of this manuscript consist of Pāli Gāthā “Verse” describing a story of Bodhisatta when he was born as a prince Vessantara. The manuscript consists of thirteen Khaṇḍha “section” and each section is composed with different numbers of Gāthā. In total there are 1,000 Gāthās.

In CS 1216, a kap yi year, on the third waning-moon day of the first [lunar] month, on the third day of the week, I [finished] writing this palm-leaf manuscript Gathā Mahāvessantara Cariyā to ensure the continuation of the five-thousand-year [era] of the Teachings of Buddha or to be long as the age of this manuscript.
Gathā Mahāvessantara Cariyā, second fascicle. Monk and novices who use the manuscript are suggested correcting any mistakes left.
