This manuscript is Jātaka or a story of the Buddha’s past life given to his disciples. (Fascicle 1) Once upon a time, the king of Brāhmadatta city had two queens: Candādevī and Kòngkham. During Candādevī’s pregnancy, she was slandered by Kòngkam for cheating on the king. Candādevī was thus chased away and lived outside the city. She gave birth to a Bodhisatta son who lived in a conch shell. When Candādevī knew that her son lived inside, she broke the shell and called her son “Suvaṇṇasaṅkha.”
Colophon:
[The writing of this manuscript] was completed at the time of the morning drum in CS 1248, a rawai set year, on the first waxing-moon day of the first [lunar] month, the fourth day of the week. I, Novice Indavijaya, have recently started writing palm-leaf manuscripts. I am not good at it.
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukkhaṃ niccaṃ.
I am not good at writing palm-leaf manuscripts. I was also distracted because I heard people talking, this caused confusing positions of vowels. May I be liberated from the Cycle of Rebirths and attain the Nibbāna.
Suvaṇṇasaṅkha, first fascicle, six fascicles in total, belonging to Wat Ban Hong.
