Dānakaṇḍa or Thanakhan means "Alms-giving" and is the third of the 13 sections of Vessantara Jataka. The story tells of Queen Phussadī who asked her husband, King Sonsai (Sanjaya) who ruled Sivi kingdom, to reduce the banishment of her dear son. But her effort failed. Before leaving the kingdom, Prince Vessantara distributed many gifts which were called "Satta jataka maha dana" (seven kinds of alms-gifts) including elephants, horses, carts, servants, dairy cows, and male and female slaves, 700 each. Thereafter the Prince along with Maddī and their children, Jali and Kanha left the kingdom to leave for Mount Vamkata.
Colophon:
May the merit derived from writing this manuscript support me to reach Nibbāna. As the fruition of the merit is greatly enormous, may it also be expanded to my family members and my teachers. In CS 1225, a ka khai year, on the thirteenth waning-moon day of the twelfth [lunar] month, the seventh day of the week, Novice Braḥmasona wrote the manuscript at Wat Si Bun Rüang, near the main road. I wrote the manuscript during my stay of assistance to Sawathu Cao Luang Chaiyawut.
