While residing in the Jetavana Monastery in Savatthi, King Mahanama asked the Buddha about the merit one gained from giving alms. Then the Buddha delivered a sermon describing the merit derived from giving various gifts. For example: one who made a Buddha statue as a gift would gain merit for ten kappa (eon); one who made a manuscript as a gift would gain merit for nine kappa; one who was ordained as a monk would gain merit for eight kappa; one who built a stupa as a gift would gain merit for seven kappa; and so on…

Folio 12 on the recto side: In BE 2515, a tao cai year, on the fourth day of the waxing moon of the eighth [lunar] month, a Wednesday, at the time of the sunset drum (13:30–15:00), [the writing was finished]. Pha Phui Thiracitta Thera, the abbot of Vat Pha Maha That Rajabovoravihan, and Chao Khana Tasaeng Tai of Vat That (the ecclesiastical head of the sub-district), municipal Luang Prabang, were the sponsor and the scribe of this manuscript to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May the benefits derived from this merit be a condition to reach Nirvana. Suddhinaṃ dhamma dānaṃ āsavak khayāvahaṃ hotu no anāgate kāle niccaṃ dhuvaṃ dhuvaṃ hotu (May the benefits of giving the Dhamma be a condition for us to be released from defilements constantly and certainly).
