The belief in upbāt (Pali: upadava, inauspiciousness) was adopted in ancient times and has remained until the present. Inauspicious events such as a falcon or a hawk catching on the roof of a house, or specific sounds like the sound of a gong, a drum or a bell without being struck can be signals of dangers: people becoming ill, houses getting burned, or enemies attacking. When these events occur, the people organize a ritual to exorcise their houses or villages.
