Thanakhan or Dānaka means "Alms-giving" and is the third episode of the 13 episodes of the Vessantara Jātaka. Thanakhan ban ton is the first part of this episode. The text describes the great alms-giving of Vessantara. Before leaving his kingdom to go to Mount Vamka, Prince Vessantara distributed many things as gifts which are called "Satta jataka mahā dāna" (seven kinds of alms-gifts) including elephants, horses, carts, servants, dairy cows, male and female slaves, 700 each. Then Prince Vessantara, his wife Maddī and his two children, Jali and Kanha, left the kingdom in the direction to Mount Vamka.
