On one occasion while the Buddha was staying at the Jetavana Monastery in Savatthi, Sariputta Thera asked him about the regulations pertaining to the ordination of a novice. The Buddha stated that a monk could ordain a novice, but the monk had to be knowledgeable and capable to teach his disciple the ten precepts.
