The Buddha was dwelling at the Anathapindika Monastery in Jeta’s Grove near Savatthi. When the night came, a deity whose surpassing splendor radiation illuminated the entire Jeta Grove came to the presence of the Buddha, drew near, respectfully saluted the Buddha and stood at one side. Standing thus, he addressed the Buddha in verses: many deities and men, yearning for good things, have pondered on Blessings. Pray, tell me the Supreme Blessing. The Buddha addressed him in verse: not to associate with the fool but with the wise and honor those who are worth being respected. Then the Buddha delivered a sermon about 38 kinds of Blessings.
